Beaches & Bays
LONG BAY
Launch your kayak from Long Bay’s beautiful beach reserve and paddle around to Puhoi’s river mouth. Discover some fantastic spots to stop for a picnic or just take in the views as you pass through Stillwater and other scenic areas on the way. Alternatively, paddle in the other direction and hug the coastline past the marine reserve and around to Waiake Beach (see below).
WAIAKE BEACH
Waiake is a beautiful beach which boasts a picturesque rocky outcrop in its bay which is often surrounded by anchored boats. This beach is a popular destination for local families picnicking / barbecuing and soaking up the sun. A quick paddle would take you around the coast to Browns Bay (see below for more details) and a longer paddle to Long Bay (see above for more details) via the marine reserve.
BROWNS BAY
Browns Bay is a hot spot for family activities & people enjoying fish & chips on the beach for tea. Usually bustling, Browns Bay has the local skate park & a large ship-shaped children’s playground which draws in many locals as well as great cafes located on the beachfront with sea views. The bay is large enough for a little recreational paddling or you can explore further along the coastline too.
MAIRANGI BAY
Mairangi Bay is popular with teenagers and again, the residences overlooking the ocean offer up some interesting scenery to kayakers. Again, this bay is in close proximity to adjacent bays allowing for a more interesting paddle. Mairangi Bay itself is also a bustling village with cafes and playgrounds to take advantage of.
MILFORD BEACH
Bordering Takapuna and home to many families, executives and retirees who enjoy a slice of better living. The North Shore’s best selection of restaurants and shops are in Takapuna (just down the road) and with it being so near to the Devonport and the city, kayaking in this area has heaps of interesting locations and views to offer.
Lakes & Meanders
LAKE PUPUKE
Spend a few hours paddling and relaxing at Lake Pupuke, a water-filled extinct volcanic crater located near Takapuna. Lake Pupuke is a great place to paddle if you are thinking of taking it easy, would like to stop off and have a picnic or want to see some stunning homes and experience the black geese on the water. Due to the fact that it is a lake, it is also a great spot if you choose to paddle on a day that is a little windy as the lake is more protected than the open ocean.
